About this Item

New York, 1907. Octavo, quarter brown calf. 365 pages. Special Library Edition, limited to 500 copies printed on Old Stratford Linen. Covers lightly soiled and scufed, but still a very good copy. Benson's first general collection of speculative essays, covering such subjects as Education, Ambition, Egotism, Books, the Simple Life, etc. Twelve of the 18 essays were originally published in Cornhill Magazine from 1905-06. A. C. Benson (1862-1925) was the son of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and one of the most prolific (seventy books in all) and popular essayists of the Edwardian period. "While he dabbled in various genres, including poetry, the short story, the novel, and biography, it was the meditative essay, written from the standpoint of a liberal and somewhat sentimental Christian, that he made most distinctively, and lucratively, his own. He had a wide following throughout the English-speaking world, maintained a daunting correspondence, and for the last twenty-eight years of his life kept a diary that amounted at his death to 180 volumes comprising over four million words.".
