Vincennes: Harvey, Mason & Co., 1858. [8], 156 [1]pp. Original blindstamped cloth. Binding rather sunned. Else tight and very good. A presentation copy, inscribed on front free endpaper: "Hon. John A. Rockwell / from his friend / the / Author." Also tipped in this copy is an early ALS from the author dated at Norwich, Connecticut, April 6, 1836, addressed to Wilson P. Hunt of St. Louis, being a letter of introduction for Rockwell who at the time was "on a visit to the West for the purpose of examining some property which he has purchased on the Illinois River." The Littell Copy, with their gilt leather bookplate. In a blue cloth slipcase. Howes L-152. Byrd, p. 189. Sabin 39317. Streeter Sale 1418 (1839 ed). An important work by one of the first Illinois historians, here present in the second, much enlarged edition. The first edition, printed in Louisville in 1839, contained only forty-eight pages. Includes letters by George Rogers Clark and extracts from the journal of the capture of Vincennes kept by Major Bowman. His greatest is now [1891] extremely difficult to secure a copy" - Magazine of American History, May 1891.
