About this Item

Third Edition, 1926. Large octavo (10"x 7") in gray cloth. 146 pages including the 1926 Addenda. This third edition is the first with color illustrations including a tissue guarded frontispiece, twenty-five color plates in all and many other photos of dramatic scenes as well as some illustrating Native Americans and associated Indian items, the Purse of Chief Joseph and others; a full-color fold-out panorama of The Columbia tipped in at the back of the book. This copy is INSCRIBED, SIGNED and DATED by the author. Filling the entire front flyleaf is a full page inscription to the book's original owner, handsomely hand written and Signed "Samuel Christopher Lancaster / Portland, Oregon – December 16th '28." The original owner wrote his name on the free front endpaper. Overall about Very Good, a few spots of foxing to the title page, slight wear at extremities, otherwise clean, tight and bright with vibrant color pictures. Lancaster was of course the primary designer of the Columbia Highway, now the Historic Columbia River Highway, the nation's first and oldest scenic highway. This rather elaborate volume is his testament to that creation. Bookseller Inventory # J60215
