In the latter case the dolls should have a stout wire around the waist under the clothes, running up the back, secured at the neck by another ring of wire (easily concealed under a ruff or a necklace), thence going up back Of the head for several inches, bent at the end into a hook. A slender wire or a thread with a ring attached is fastened to the right wrist, or, if the marionettes are large, there is one for each arm, which controls the movements of the arm. Thus the little actors can walk and run, Sit down and rise again, shake hands, fight, or embrace, in short, do enough to keep the stage in constant activity.
