About this Item

N.d., but an early 20th century restrike of the 1836 original, with bright hand-coloring. Other than the freshness of the paper pastedown on the boards and the outer box which clearly was not the sort issued with a book in the early 19th century, this copy could pass for an exceptionally well-preserved copy of the original. 13.5 by 9 cm. 24 panels, mostly humorous and lightly satirical, but also a few with a more sentimental quality. The front cover resembles the original perfectly, stating "Designed Etched & Published by George Cruikshank No 23 Myddelton Terrace Pentonville 1836" just as the true first edition did, and the back cover headed by a "T", for "Tilt, 86 Fleet Street", the original publisher, and an etching presumably of Tilt himself at his shop. This is NOT the facsimile issued by the Arts Council of Great Britain in the 1970s! The outer box has wear, with one edge of the lower part missing. Bookseller Inventory # 004913

Shipping Terms:

The shipping cost provided automatically by ABE assumes that the item is the size of an average hardcover book. Since our stock is comprised largely of material which is bigger and heavier, we will often need to request additional shipping charges as a result. We pride ourselves on always packing safely, with the actual materials and method of packing depending on the item(s), where it is going, and with whom we are shipping. We most frequently use the post office, but on some high value items, or upon request, we may use alternatively UPS or FedEx. With the postal service, to domestic destinations with lower value items and the automatically furnished ABE shipping quote, we will usually use Media Mail; on higher value items we are partial to Priority or Express Mail. We will always seek to comply with a customer's wishes if they are communicated to us. When we seek additional shipping charges, we pass along those charges at our cost -- we do not add for handling or materials generally.
