Octavo, bound in contemporary half brown morocco, with marbled boards and endpapers, the spine tooled in gold, in six compartments with raised bands. 119 pages. Moderately foxed throughout. Joints lightly rubbed and starting, but still a very good copy. First Edition in EnglishGerhart Hauptmann (1862-1946) was a German dramatist and novelist who was greatly influenced by Ibsen. He was counted among the most important promoters of literary naturalism. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1912.The publisher Charles H. Sergel (1861-1926) was born in Muscatine, Iowa. Of German descent, he was for a few years the Representative of the Republic of Peru in Chicago. He was President of the Press Club of Chicago in 1910-1911. The translator, Janet Achurch (1864-1916) was a noted feminist and the fist English actress to play Ibsen, winning wide acclaim as Nora in "A Doll's House" in 1899. Bookseller Inventory # 10248
