About this title

During the century 1795-1895, the Royal Navy repeatedly surveyed the south-western coast of Africa. "By Command of their Lordships" publishes verbatim extracts from the ships' "Remark Books", together with information on the ships, sketch maps showing the ships' tracks, manuscript and published Admiralty charts, and historical notes and pictures. The book brings to life a period that combined serious scientific work with adventure at sea, gun-running, feudal hegemonies, suicidal politics, diplomatic wrangling, danger and betrayal.

From the Publisher:

In the Foreword to this book, Rear-Admiral JAL Myres, Hydrographer of the Navy, points out that Naval Remark Books have proved to be "mines of information" for scholars in many disciplines ever since the observations were recorded. Thus, this book forms an encyclopaedic resource on the Namibian coast, making it a handy reference work. There is also a well-researched chronology of historical events and characters important during this century, and a commentary on the local historical significance of each vessel's visit, and why it was sent there. An essay describing the methods of survey used to map the coast at the time helps understanding of the technical details recorded in the Remark Books. The lyrical prose and firsthand, immediate descriptions of a dramatic coastline, together with accounts of the sea adventures befalling the naval explorers will engage the reader's attention and immerse him in the nineteenth century.
