2d ed vols. I-III only. Volumes I-III of Kent's Commentaries, Second Edition Kent, James [1763-1847]. Commentaries on American Law. New York: O. Halsted, 1832. Volumes I-III of a four-volume set. Octavo (9" x 6"). Volumes I-II: Contemporary calf, blind fillets to boards, single lettering pieces and blind fillets to spines. Some rubbing to extremities, a few scuffs to boards, front board beginning to separate from Volume I, corners bumped and somewhat worn. Toning, faint dampstaining to most of text. Early owner signature (of Daniel Goodman) to head of title pages, interiors otherwise clean. Volume III: Contemporary sheep, blind fillets to boards, red and black lettering pieces and blind fillets to spine. Some rubbing, a few shallow scuffs to boards, corners bumped and lightly worn, faint early owner siganture and small inkspatters to spine, early owner bookplate (of Thos. J. Michie) to front pastedown. Toning and occasional light foxing to text. Early owner signature (of James Baumgartner) and annotation to front free endpaper, interior otherwise clean. $300. * Second edition. Probably the single most important interpretation of American law. Marvin ranks it above Blackstone's Commentaries, writing that "England has only furnished one Blackstone, and the American rival equals him in classic purity and elegance of style, and surpasses him in extent and copiousness of learning.": Marvin, Legal Bibliography (1847) 438.
