Illustrated with Maps and Engravings. Fourth Edition. Philadelphia, J.W. Moore, 1849.Two volumes, hardcover, 12mo (4-1/2 x 7-1/4), bound in contemporary half brown morocco and marbled boards. Pp. 320, 318, with two steel-engraved frontispieces, a wood engraved map, and four other full-page wood engravings, plus 6 vignette wood engravings. This copy lacks the folding map which is called for. Top joint cracked in Vol.I but covers still holding firmly. Light to moderate foxing throughout as usual. Name in ink of John R. Bartlett in top margin of each volume. Light dampstain in top margin of Vol. II. Bookplate. A very good copy overall. Wagner-Camp 108:10; Howes G401; Sabin 28712; Graff 1659; Rittenhouse 255. "The work stands as a cornerstone of all studies on the Santa Fe Trail in the early period. (Rittenhouse). An interesting association copy in that Bartlett (1805-1886) was the United States Boundary Commisioner from 1850-53, responsible for surveying the bounday between the United States and Mexico.
