About this Item

Three issues bound in plain paper wraps. Pagination runs 337-384. Founded and edited by Horace Mann, The Common School Journal addressed issues of public school, advocating positive school reforms and arguing for public funding for schools. Mann saw education as a way for young people to become responsible citizens. Mann was a Massachusetts legislator and one of the country's first educational reformers, actively reforming school systems and establishing ideas used by many schools throughout the country during the 19th century. These particular three issues discuss various educational themes and issues, as well as containing a running letter 'from a teacher to her young female friend,' in which various geographical topics are discussed. This includes a brief discussion of islands in the South Pacific and Australasia, including brief mention of the Society Islands, and mention (name only) of the Sandwich Islands and Easter Island among others. GOOD condition. Moderate to heavy wrinkling to the wraps, with some soiling and minor staining (lower front cover). Some writing in ink and pencil to the upper front cover. Minor scattered foxing in the interior. Faint dampstain at the lower fore edge. Owner's name in pencil on the first page. Sabin 14997 (for the complete run). Bookseller Inventory # 005398
