About this Item

first softcover edition, no dj as issued; translated from the French by Gordon B. Ford, Jr., with his inscription on the front cover; this was a presentation copy by him, dated June 8, 1972, to his fellow Kentuckian, Kyle Perkins, my colleague at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale for over 30 years; Gordon was my best friend from graduate school days in linguistics at Harvard; he had/has an exceptional mind that was lost to linguistics when he left the field, after some years at Northwestern and Northern Iowa, and returned to Kentucky; we have him to thank that Meillet's influential ideas in developing the Comparative Method in historical linguistics have been made available to English readers (the preparation of the English translation was a golden opportunity for the translator to add his own ideas and commentary, which he unfortunately decided not to do); comparative and historical linguistics is frequently thought of as antediluvian, out of touch, which is definitely not the case with the present work; I was astonished for example by Meillet's musings, from the early 1920s, that the diaspora and independent developments in English in the U.S. and elsewhere, then as now going on before our eyes, can be compared with similar processes that must have occurred in Latin in its late stage evolution into the Romance languages; this is William Labov's 'uniformitarianism' in an older guise, plus c,a change, plus c'est la me^me chose; clearly, historical linguistics and sociolinguistics are twin sisters; this book was issued in a small edition and is hard to find; soft covers as issued; from the library of the linguist, Glenn Gilbert; upper edge of front cover bumped, with a slight crease extending through the pages well into the book; Perkins has printed his name in ink on the top edge, the pages have been cut, although the book appears little read; overall rating Very Good; this work would make a good addition to a collection of books on historical linguistics, the comparative method, the French contribution to diachronic linguistics, and historico-socio-linguistics in general; covers are beige with black lettering on the front and spine, the publisher's equine logo on the front; 12vo - 7 1/2 inches tall, xxii + 331 numbered pages. Store Description

Triple G Books is owned and operated by an emeritus professor of linguistics, who was also an ardent book collector over the period 1954 to 2007. Books for sale range from linguistics, pidgin & creole languages, sociolinguistics, anthropology, education, and comparative religion through modern first editions and German and Scandinavian books. A number of the books are valuable and hard to find, as for example a 1/2-leather-bound first edition of Alfred Russell Wallace's The Malay Archipelago (2 vols.), recently sold for presentation to the Mayor of London on his visit to Malaysia, and a first edition of H. G. Wells' The Time Machine, a novel of the 19th century pointing to a scary future, a continuing revelation to me. Triple G Books stands back of its books in every way.
