Book Description Privately Printed,, Washington:, 1888. 8vo, modern 1/4 brown morocco and marbled boards, spine lettered in gilt, new endpapers, 56 pp. Ex-library with rubberstamp markings, title page somewhat worn and soiled with tear in bottom left corner, some browning and toning, repaired tear in bottom of first 38 pages, affecting some text notes; otherwise very good in fine modern binding. This research was compiled by Bourke when he was an aid to General Cook during campaigns against hostiles in Missouri. To a large degree, it deals with the customs of the Zuni, Sioux, Navajo, and Cheyenne, but it also covers practices of other peoples in other parts of the world. The reader is informed in the preface that the subject is treated in a scholarly fashion. Basically, the work is a "study in ethnology and anthropology, and not for general perusal." Much of the discussion has a ceremonial focus, including how different tribes use urine in their religious rites, such as the use of substances that promote urination to enhance the ceremony. However, the author also points to the more practical uses of urine, including its use for tanning skins and scouring wool. Bookseller Inventory # 100973
