24mo. in full leather ornately stamped in gilt. COOPER'S BOLD OWNERSHIP SIGNATURE APPEARS IN INK AT THE TOP OF THE PREFACE PAGE. There are pencil markings, presuably by Cooper, in the margins of several pages, indicating passages of interest, and a few of these pages are also dog-eared. The leather is fairly worn at the tips and about the edges and there is some moisture staining to the rear endpapers and blanks and lightly to the last couple leaves of the text. Peter Cooper (1791-1883) was an American industrialist, inventor and philanthropist. His Baltimore iron woorks in 1830 built the Tom Thumb, the first American-made steam locomotive, He alter established manufacturing concerns in Trenton and New York City. Cooper was one of the key men involved with the laying of the trans-Atlantic telegraph cable in the 1850s. He was an active abolitionist and also sponsored Indian rights groups. He ran unsuccessfully for President in 1876. The building he built for public functions, the Cooper Union Building, is a New York City landmark still in use today. 24mo - over 5" - 5" tall.
