About this Item

WILLARD. Samuel. A Compleat Body of Divinity in Two Hundred and Fifty Expository Lectures on the Assembly's Shorter Catechism Wherein the Doctrines of the Christian Religion Are Unfolded, Their Truth Confirm'd, Their Excellence Display'd, Their Usefulness Improv'd; Contrary Errors & Vices Refuted & Expos'd, Objections Answer'd, Controversies Settled, Cases of Conscience Resolv'd; and a Great Light Thereby Reflected on the Present Age. Boston: Printed by B. Green and S. Kneeland for B. Eliot and D. Henchman, 1726. 1st ed. Folio. [2],iv,3,[3, list of subscribers],158,177-461,463, 564,463,564,465,566,467-666,581-914,[2, Catalogue of the Author's Works] pp. Contemporary full paneled leather, decorated in blind, expertly rebacked in period-style, raised spine bands, red morocco spine label. Uniform toning, light scattered foxing, minor spotting to title page, very small worm hole at foot to the first 16 leaves not affecting text, else a very good copy. Evans 2828. Sabin 104075. "It is the first folio volume, other than Laws, and the largest work up to this time printed in the United States. Owing to the fact of the printing being done by several presses, a number of pages are numbered twice, the text making just one thousand pages"--Evans. The list of about 500 names of subscribers is remarkable considering the subject and size of the work and should be considered a tribute to Willard's memory by his contemporaries. The list can be viewed as a wide spectrum of public-minded citizens. Among the Bostonians on the list is Josiah Franklin, Benjamin Franklin's father, who bought two books, and Franklin's brother James, the printer. The volume collects Willard's sermons over 20 years. Willard, one of the last great Puritan preachers, was known for his opposition to the Salem witch trials and for serving as acting president of Harvard between Increase Mather and John Leverett.
