About this Item

A Compleat History of the Whole Proceedings of the Parliament of Great Britain Against Dr. Henry Sacheverell with His Tryal Before the House of Peers for High Crimes and Misdemeanors; the Reasons of Those Lords That Enter'd Their Protests; etc. London: J. Baker, 1710. 12mo, contemporary calf with five raised bands and gilt lettering and decoration on spine. An important document for the history of the Anglican Church. Sacheverell had attacked the Queen, the Whigs and the Bishop of Salisbury in two controversial sermons. He was then summoned before the House of Lords for trial. He was judged guilty and suspended for three years; and the two sermons ordered to be burned at the Royal Exchange. This made him a martyr in the eyes of the populace and (along with heavy taxes on Londoners) resulted in several riots in London and other areas of the country. The rioting in turn led to the downfall of the government ministry later that year and the passing of the Riot Act in 1714. This treatise contains the most important speeches of the month-long trial and a list of the individual peers with their decision for or against Sacheverell. Covers are edgeworn with several small stains, but generally clean and tight; partial separation inside front cover at edge of paste-down but has not detached. Text block clean and tight with only minimal toning and little foxing. Bookseller Inventory # 353

Store Description

Books, Historical Documents, and Ephemera -- Burns Bizarre specializes in the eclectic. We try to find items that are unusual and not already all over the net. Most of our stock is rare or out-of-print - dating from the 18th century to the present. We sell in-print books only if they are limited editions, signed by the author or illustrator, or have some other significant associational or historical interest. We do not sell reprint editions, book club editions, or print-on-demand items. We are a family operation -- One of us formerly had a bricks-n-mortar bookstore "Books on Main" in Ventura, California and the other has been selling for many years at book fairs and on Ebay from his base in Sacramento. We are now together in Sacramento CA. The name comes from one our father's enterprises in Chicago during the 1930's -- we are proud to continue his tradition of what is now eighty years of selling things people could easily live without.

Shipping Terms:

We ship via U.S. Postal Service. Shipping costs are based on an average weight, including packaging, of 2 LB, or 1 KG. We don't charge extra if you are somewhat above that, but If your book is very heavy or special handling is required we may add an extra shipping charge. This usually occurs only for books being shipped via priority mail or internationally; the extra cost for shipping can make the difference in whether we make a profit or take a loss on the sale. We will always contact you first to get your approval for the extra charge. Sometimes shipping doesn't cost as much as we estimate -- if it's a negligible amount we just let it be but if it is substantial, we refund the excess shipping. If you prefer shipping via UPS, Fedex or DHL instead, contact us for a quote.

INSURANCE: Except for very rare or costly items, we do not insure our shipments beyond the small amount USPS already provides for priority mail shipments only. Because lost packages are so rare, the cost of insurance for less costly items is more than the acceptable risk -- especially given the hassle and paperwork of trying to collect the insurance. This is especially true for international shipments. If we feel insurance is appropriate, we will quote you the extra cost for adding it.

For truly rare items, we may substitute UPS, FedEx, or DHL for the added tracking and security they provide. Depending upon the item, we may absorb the extra cost or we may quote you a higher rate.
