About this Item

First edition. Hardcover in light blue cloth lettered and illustrated in black; 120 pp. plus publisher's list at rear. Illustrated throughout with instructional photographs, drawings and diagrams. Front cover reads: :TheJapanese Secret Science Jiu Jitsu. Demonstrated by the Ex. Supt. of Police at Nagasaki, Japan and Instructor of Pres. Roosevelt. A 50.00 Course in Jiu Jitsu". A tight, near fine example, minor wear at the extremities and a bit of edge rubbing; tiny chip to the edge of the title page. Internally clean--a very acceptable collectors copy of a very scarce book on jiu-jitsu, rarely found in any condition. The course is presented by Prof. John J. Obrien who was a nagasaki ploice inspector for ten years in the late 19th century and is credited with introducing jiu-jitsu to America. One of his clients was Theodore Roosevelt who also (strongly) encouraged this and other physical culture training to memebers of his cabinet and D.C. department heads. There is an introduction by John F. McDonald and an essay on jiu-jitsu by Chicago journalist William E. Curtis. The many photographs feature O'Brien demonstrating the art.
