About this Item

Signed presentation inscription copy from Paul McCartney to the great film composer Bernard Herrmann. Inscribed by Paul McCartney, on the half-title, "To Benny from Paul - you'll have to supply the score for yourself - I'm sure you'll have no trouble. I hope we can work together again." The first large format paperbound edition of the book that reconstructed from film stills, Erich Von Stroheim's infamously butchered and lost ten hour version magnum opus (described in such terms as the "Holy Grail" and the "Magna Carta" of film) that was only ever shown as the two-and-a-half hour film Greed in 1924. Portrait frontispiece, and numerous black and white photographs in the text throughout. Quarto. Printed card wrappers, as issued. Extremities rubbed, creases to spine and front wrapper, some light marks, internally clean. A very good copy. Enclosed in a handsome custom cloth clamshell box. Bernard Herrmann (1911-1975) is considered by many to be the greatest composer of film music. The Beatles reputedly based the strings in Eleanor Rigby on Herrmann's famous strings for Alfred Hitchcock's film Psycho. His film scores include Citizen Kane, Vertigo, Taxi Driver, North By Northwest, The Day the Earth Stood Still, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, Jane Eyre, The 7th Voyage of Sinbad, Fahernheit 451, and numerous other distinguished films. Herrmann was one of the earliest discoverers of The Beatles when he met them performing in an English club in 1962. He got on the band personally and when he returned to Los Angeles brought their early German records and unsuccessfully tried to get Universal Records to sign them. While still a Beatle in 1966, McCartney was commissioned to write the film score for the film, The Family Way, and his friend Herrmann stepped forward and gave McCartney lessons in film scoring. A remarkable association copy. Bookseller Inventory # 15024J
