First edition. Octavo in dark brown cloth decorated in blind stamp and gilt, ornate spine lettering and decoration in gilt. Title page printed in black, red and blue. Half title in green decorative border surrounding design in blue and "Poetical Works" in red. 404 pp. A tight example, gilt bright, shallow wear to the spine extremities and shallow splitting to the upper aprox. 1/2" of front and rear gutters. Old printed ownership name label front pastedown and a small subsequent owner's (same last name) and date of 1862 top edge of the front free endpaper. Foxing to the blanks and half-title but otheewise the title paeg and text block is bright with just a bit of occasional small foxed spots. Lucy Hooper (d. 1841 at age 24) was an Amercan poet of the British Romantic milieu with stong abolitionist leanings as well as sympathy for the rights of Native Amercians. She was the first North SAmerican to publish , in 1833, a poem inspired by William Blake's "The Fairy Funeral". Upon her untimely passing from consumption in 1841, she was elegized by John Greenleaf Whittier in his poem "Upon The Death of Lucy Hooper". In 1849, Edgar Alan Poe named her the 9th most accomplished author to appear in Griswold's anthology of female poets. Bookseller Inventory # E15335
