Complete Poetical Works of Robert W. Service

First edition. 228 p. This volume contains five complete book of poetry written by Robert Service (1874-1958). Service wrote witty and homey-sounding poems, telling of far-flung places and interesting adventures; he is probably best known for his tales of the Yukon and the Gold Rush. He was born into a well-off family England and grew up in Scotland, receiving a good education. In 1894 he went to the wild Yukon area of Canada, and traveled widely thereafter: Hollywood, Cuba, Paris, Louisiana, and elsewhere. Among other things, he was a war correspondent during the Balkan Wars of 1812-13 and an ambulance driver in France in World War I. The books included in this volume are: The Spell of the Yukon; Ballads of a Cheechako; Rhymes of a Rolling Stone; Rhymes of a Red Cross Man, and Ballads of a Bohemian. Octavo (approximately 8" x 5 1/2"), dark green textured cloth hard cover with gilt titles on the front and spine and publisher (Barse) on spine; top edge gilt, in perfect condition. The rare dust jacket, similarly green and textured and with a gilt title on the spine, has a few chips; there are little bits of clear tape on the inside of the jacket preventing further chips and tears.
