The Collector's Arnheim edition, number 47 of 300 sets. This elegantly designed publication features striking allegorical plates by Frederick Simpson Coburn (1871-1960). Coburn, who later became a renowned landscape painter, began his career as an illustrator. He illustrated versions of Irving, Dickens, and Tennyson, but considered his work on Poe to be his best. BAL 16171. 10 vols, octavo (222 x 145 mm). Numerous plates after Francis Simpson Coburn with tissue guards captioned in red, decorative head- and tailpieces and initials, illustrated title pages printed in red and black. Near-contemporary red morocco by Maurin, spines lettered in gilt, compartments ruled and decorated in gilt, triple gilt fillets to boards with corner rosettes, gilt inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt, fore and bottom edges uncut. A fine set.
