About this Item

Cincinnati, 1828. 8vo, later red buckram, 591 + 520 pp. An attractive set, with excellent contents, free of foxing. Flint's major historical survey of the west, in its first edition. "A Condensed Geography and History is Flint's ambitious, profitable effort not only to tell the history of colonization in Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, the Arkansas Territory, Tennessee, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Michigan, the Northwest Territory, and Texas, but also to describe western geography, climates, and flora and fauna. The West as Flint presents it here is both a locus to be statistically reported and a reflection of the escapist romanticism of Jean Jacques Rousseau and François-René de Chateaubriand. Flint synthesizes data from more than thirty sources; depicts the West as a place of danger, disease, and challenge; and appeals to a wide range of readers, as he predicts that Yankee technological ingenuity will turn a resource-laden region into a democratic, agrarian, and bucolic utopia. Distressing today are sections of the book condoning slavery and picturing Native Americans as inept, cruel, and cowardly; perhaps sad is Flint's concentrating on the commercial potential of the West and ignoring its aesthetic appeal. Flint was an early western social historian and a literary pioneer who helped reveal the possibilities of the West as a subject for fiction." - ANB. Howes F-200. Bookseller Inventory # SET2901
