About this Item

Unpaginated preliminaries, 337p., publisher's ad leaf, fourth edition with a special preface, original decorated wraps over a textblock secured with hefty staples, one of which is showing. Front cover image is a wood-engraved portrait of author in wimple, back wrap more ads. An intact copy, if damaged and dirty: quite edgeworn, with some chipping at head and tail, a split halfway down the upper joint (hence exposed staple), some tiny dog-ears, short closed tear to front wrap, foxed edges, and much impacted grime. Must be a great read. Clean within; inside find only an ancient San Francisco book & stationer's rubberstamp impression, L. Levin & Son. First issued 1888. A publisher's note dated this same year, February 1891, pleads with prospective purchasers to avoid the just-released Canadian pirate edition, with sister Agatha seconding, saying "Letters intended for myself will reach me only through messers. Jordan Bros." This same note says, Banned in Russia. Sister Agatha contributes three short prefaces, to printings 1, 2 and 4, all of which being variations of "my book is marching on." JB ads push "Awful disclosures of Maria Monk of the Hotel Dieu nunnery of Montreal," and "Color in dress, a book for the ladies". Bookseller Inventory # 162665
