About this Item

Charles L. Webster & Company, 1889, remains of publisher's original first-edition luxury-format, blind-stamped leather binding, spine missing and covers detached, some leather missing from the covers, but with the original end-papers and pasted-on ticket (#2624) intended to keep track of all sold copies, thus preventing subscription agents from siphoning the copies off to non-subscribers without the publisher's knowledge. With the half-title on the recto of frontispiece (which is by far the rarest first-issue point), without the S between The and King on page 59, but with the perfect type on p. 72. Text block fine. An exceedingly rare survival, in however rudimentary format, of a publisher's luxury-format issue, of the book normally found in pictorial cloth binding, with the rarest issue-point of the half-title on the recto of the frontispiece present. The copy should not be, in our judgment, repaired, but preserved as is, with all warts. Language: eng. Bookseller Inventory # 2009144387
