Manuscript book, 24 leaves written one side only along with two title pages (there are also unused leaves at the end), inserted is a written letter of application from William Smith dated 1871. Includes detailed uniform regulations, recruiting form, and certificate of membership, all in pen, and ends with the signatures of 24 members, the first being S. W. Owen. During the Civil War the President's Mounted Guard was also known as Owen's Militia Cavalry Company or Captain Samuel Owen's Independent Company of Cavalry and served for three months in defense of the Capitol during which time a member of their unit managed to become the first Union soldier to be captured by the Confederates. Samuel W. Owen was their Captain (later in the war he became a Lieutenant Colonel in the 3rd Pennsylvania Cavalry) and here he seems to be attempting to revive the unit but little seems to have come of the project. Lettered cloth binding with leather spine now badly chipped and front cover detached, library book plate, a few pages of text very faded but still readable, partially disbound. - If you are reading this, this item is actually (physically) in our stock and ready for shipment once ordered.
