About this Item

(COLORADO). The Constitution of the State of Colorado, Adopted in Convention, March 14, 1876; also the Address of the Convention to the People of Colorado. Election, Saturday, July 1, 1876. Denver: Tribune Book and Job Printing House, 1876. 1st ed. 65pp. Printed wrappers in custom cloth clamshell case with grey morocco spine. Removed, lacks rear wrapper, spine slightly chipped, a few penciled marginalia, else very good. McMurtrie and Allen 289. Wynar 7257. Colorado's first constitution accepted by its voters. Efforts had been made since 1862 to secure the adoption of a constitution. Bancroft writes: "The constitution-makers of Colorado were skilled artificers. It was a noble document, with those errors only which the course of events develops. An attempt was made for universal suffrage by introducing a clause making it obligatory upon the first legislature to pass a law conferring the franchise upon women, which was, however to be submitted to the vote of the male citizens at the first election thereafter"--Bancroft, p. 433.
