About this Item

Hardcover. 208 pages. Dimensions: 8.9in. x 6.2in. x 0.7in.According to the Justice Departments National Crime Survey, the crime rate in the United States is lower today than it was when Nixon was in the White House. In spite of this, political leaders demand nationwide prison construction as a response to the war on drugs and to accommodate the results of the new three strikes law. At the same time, the gap between rich and poor is wider than ever and the needs of the non-disruptive poor are being ignored by the economic and political elites to the point of unprecedented homelessness. The author predicts this widening gap will prompt the return of 1960s-style civil turmoil which will lead to the end of the war on drugs and the emptying of hundreds of thousands of cells so the protesting poor can be plausibly threatened with incarceration. About this title

Synopsis:

This book offers an extended description of continuous-time signals related to signals and systems. As a time-varying process of any physical state of any object, which serves for representation, detection, and transmission of messages, a modern electrical signal possesses, in applications, many specific properties. The text covers principle foundations of signals theory. Presenting bandlimited and analytic signals, the book reviews the methods of their description, transformation (by Hilbert transform), and sampling.

Review:

This is a nice book on signal processing in communication technology. Ideas are succinctly explained with simple examples and appealing mathematics. Almost all examples in the book are accompanied by illustrations. The material is well organized and the text is written readably. Chapter summaries are some of the compelling aspects of the book. Furthermore, end-of-chapter problems are well sorted and fit the themes that have been presented in their respective chapters. All the way, the book give glimpses of historical accounts by pointing to the originators and major contributors of signal processing and related areas.

At any rate, any one serious of doing signal processing should look into this book. In particular the brevity of the mathematics, the abundance of explanatory examples, etc., makes it accessible to readers at the advanced undergraduate level in the relevant field of studies. Surely, it can serve as a co-text or a reference for a course in signal processing.
