About this Item

This is the Everette Lee DeGolyer, Sr., copy, signed by that famed collector of scientific books and early Texas & Western exploration and travel accounts in a distinctive horizontal hand across the middle of a preliminary blank page, and stamped in green ink with his oval seal reading "E.DEGOLYER * HIS BOOK" around crossed geologist's hammers both to that page and to the title page, where it sits next to the seal of the Smithsonian Institution. Small silver label inside rear board indicates this book was rebound by Texas bookbinder Henry Nuss of Dallas; book is now half bound in red leather with title and author name stamped in gold gilt to separate spine compartments. Leather has begun to split 1/4-inch at top corner of rear board only. A lovely book, with many handsome glossy B&W plates, while some of the maps and fold-out geographic sections are in handsome pastel colors. All fold-out maps, etc., appear to be present and intact. Beginning with the title page, four small holes penetrate through the center of the first four preliminary pages. Small pieces of transparent tape have been applied. No legibility is sacrificed. These pinholes look almost as though two metal staples have been driven into pages side-by-side and then removed. Possibly to attach another label now missing? This book show NO sign of ever having been "libraried," aside from the DeGolyer signature and twin rubber-stamps -- despite the fact virtually all the collector's books supposedly went to university libraries, most notably Oklahoma's and that of Southern Methodist University. Everette Lee DeGolyer, Sr., a major figure in the twentieth-century oil business, was known for his pioneering work in petroleum geology and geophysics. Even in its early days the DeGolyer Library played a significant role on the cultural scene in Dallas. It was housed in its own splendid library room at ¿Rancho Encinal,¿ the DeGolyer estate overlooking White Rock Lake. The City of Dallas purchased the DeGolyer estate in 1982 and opened an arboretum and botanical garden there in 1984. Pages numbered 190 through 733, including index, as made. Reduced from $130.
