Book Description University of Philadelphia Press., Philadelphia, 1960. First Edition, First Printing. Octavo, original rust red cloth, gilt titles on spine. xxv + 380 pp, Notes, index. Frontispiece & diagrams in the text. A very good, clean copy in dust jacket which has a short closed tear and light fraying to spine tips. The appearance of three comets in the autumn of 1618 touched off a controversy of such proportions that its effects are still inextricably associated with some of the most dramatic events marking the dawn of our modern era. This volume contains the principal works, here translated into English, which were published during the extended controversy between Galileo and the Jesuits over the nature of comets, concluding with a commentary by Johannes Kepler. The controversy is of both scientific and philosophical significance because it was in this connection that Galileo disclosed his conception of scientific method which has been vastly influential on the course of modern thought. The principal work, 'Il Saggiatire' (The Assayer) is of extraordinary literary merit, for it is considered the greatest polemic ever written in the domains of physical science. The Assayer has never before been published in its entirety in English; nor has this group of works ever been published as a whole in any single language, some having been written in Italian and the others in Latin.
