Synopsis: There currently exist major disagreements between clinical dentists and basic researchers over the diagnosis and treatment of temporomandibular disorders. The author examines the differing paradigms from the perspectives of philosophy, epistemology and accepted principles of good science. The arguments are deconstructed and evaluated using logic, critical reasoning and common sense.
Among the issues:
* The role of occlusion in TMD
* Is TMD a psychosocial or a physiological condition?
* Whether TMD is a self-limiting illness or a disease
* Is epidemiology appropriate for TMD research?
* Whether objective electronic measurement is more appropriate than subjective judgment for evaluation of TMD
