About this Item

With frontispiece and 23 plates. Full calf, scuffed, front joint tender; interior browning, unobtrusive contemporary annotations (mostly numbering and tics). With the loose bookplate of Arnold Thackray (founder of the Chemical Heritage Foundation) and the signature of Frances A. Williams, dated 1825. Seventh American edition of this popular treatment of scientific subject matter geared toward the instruction of school children. Lessons on topics like gravity, the laws of motion, and optics, to name a few, take the form of conversations between several young ladies and a "Mrs. B" (the pseudonym of the book's author, Mrs. Marcet). Marcet (1769-1858) wrote several introductory books on science and economy. She married a prominent physician in 1799 and, after helping to proofread one of his books, was inspired to write her own work. Marcet produced little original material, but she was well known for her ability to synthesize complex theoretical arguments, popularizing them for wider public consumption.
