About this Item

Robin Smiley, Publisher of "Firsts" Magazine credits W. R. Burnett with initiating "the modern psychological gangster novel." A detailed retrospective of his career (37 novels and many screenplays) and work in "Firsts" of January and February 2002, lists Burnett's many accomplishments as novelist and screenwriter, and regards five of his works, "Saint Johnson, Dark Haward, High Sierra, Nobody Lives Forever" and "Tomorrow's Another Day" as "masterpieces." "Cool Man," a great heist page-turner, is notable for "one of the best depictions of a criminal mentality," Willie Madden, "smart, crafty and ruthless, but also vulnerable." This was his last paperback original. All of Burnett's books are out of print in the US, but three are svailable in the UK. This copy is NF, the only defect other than normal aging being a small ink scribble on first white page. The binding is clean and tight. Godl Medal Book #D1890, 50 cents price listed on cover. No statement of printing on copyright page, first edition in wrappers. "Firsts" publisher Robin Smily estimates the value of this paperback original at $25 - $40. Bookseller Inventory # 22605
