Title: Cornerstones of Confederate Collecting.
Publisher: Bibliographical Society of the University of Virginia, Charlottesville
Publication Date: 1952
Edition: 1st Edition
Small 4to. Stiff tan wrappers, stapled (as issued). 44pp (rectos only). Near fine. True first edition -- although a 1953 revised hardcover edition is sometimes mistakenly described as the first edition. This rather homespun edition -- typed double-spaced and mimeographed one-side only, bound with three staples -- is uncommon in any condition and downright scarce in this extraordinarily tight, clean, handsome condition. In it, as E.B. Long critiques, Harwell "Describes twenty Confederate imprints around which a collection might be built." Bears an interesting autograph addition: Tipped to inside front wrapper is a 6" X 5" envelope addressed in Harwell's hand to noted college president Henry King Stanford (1916-2009) and bearing Harwell's Athens, Georgia return address label (cancelled 13 December 1975) and containing Harwell's custom-made book-theme Christmas card. Laid in is a 4-page 12mo leaflet about the Bibliographical Society of the University of Virginia and their publications -- including this one, which it notes is "free to members." NEVINS II, 15.
