About this Item

Two volumes. The editor's great-grandfather was husband to one of John Collier's daughters. Dark green full cloth bindings, with gilt lettering on spine. Lettering still bright. Printed by C. F. Hodgson & Son in London. Two kinds of library stamps obtain. The first, placed on the title pages, is "Our Lady's Priory, Newbury, Berks," a Servite establishment in England. The second stamp, on the next-to-last flyleaf, is "Servite High Library, 1952 W. La Palma Ave., Anaheim, CA." Perhaps a teacher from Our Lady's Priory in England brought these volumes to America? Two stamps on Volume One's title page were blotted out with black felt pen, but on Volume Two one stamp, the English one, was not covered. White reinforcement tape professionally applied, apparently, to hinges inside both volumes. Foxing is present on title pages and protective tissue and flyleaves, but after those few pages no or very little foxing is seen. In a few places, the spine can be seen between the folios. Volume One has visible rubbing on the covers, plus sticker residue the size of a nickel on the spine. Volume Two has no residue on the spine. Volume One is 504 pages. Volume Two is 528 pages, plus about 10 pages of facsimile letters. Top edges are gilt. Other edges are rough cut. Top page edges on both volumes apparently were stamped by the high school library, as there are rectangles of black ink present, faintly legible. Bindings of both volumes are tight and solid.
