Motley (1814-1877) was an American diplomat (minister to the Austrian empire in 1861 where he worked effectively to prevent European intervention on the side of the Confederacy in the Civil War and, later, in 1870, Ambassador to the United Kingdom) and historian. Engraved frontis portrait of author in Volume I. First edition (first printing). A very good copy in green cloth covers with edge and corner wear and some fraying at lower edges and spine tops.
