About this Item

Book Condition: VG+; slight wear to bottom boards from shelving; slight bumping to test block edges; slight rubbing to boards. No DJ. Tan cloth boards and spine with black and gold lettering, decorations, and title background. Tinted text block top. 584 pp. Sir Thomas More, or more accurately Saint Thomas More, since he was beatified by the Roman Catholic Church in 1886 and canonized as a saint in 1935, has been variously described as the most attractive figure of the early sixteenth century', ¿the voice of conscience¿ of the early English Reformation and ¿one of the three greatest figures of the English Renaissance¿. He was a scholar, lawyer, theologian, statesman and eventual martyr, whose influence was less on the development of the Reformation in England as upon creating a particular genre of futuristic and idealistic writing about society. Modern Morean studies properly began with the publication in 1947 of this book. This edition contains the Latin and English texts of most of the 219 then known surviving letters sent to and from More, though the texts of the fifty-four surviving letters exchanged between Erasmus and Thomas More were not included. A clean and very presentable copy. Contains a book brochure From Catholic Hospital Association circa 1957. Bookseller Inventory # 003266
