FIRST EDITION, SIGNED ON THE FRONT FREE ENDPAPER BY THE AUTHOR "John Updike"; "first edition" is stated; unclipped ($6.95) dj front flap bears the date "4/68" (with the notation "559" written in pencil above it); from the library of the linguist Glenn Gilbert with Gilbert's inscribed bookplate, dated 12/30/1980, and comments laid in; bookseller's pencilled price notation on ffep (Strand Bookstore, NYC), hard-cover edges show some sunfading, front board somewhat splayed out; binding beginning to loosen -- when book is closed, sewn signatures at crown of spine show a gap from spine cover of ca 3 mm (bottom has no gap), hinges are tight, edges have faint foxing, bottom corner slightly soiled, top edge colored blue, overall rating G to VG; dj, protected by a glassine cover, shows shelfwear, several tears at crown of spine repaired, none longer than ca 2 cm, slight foxing and rubbed edges, rated G; the book is bound in blue cloth with the usual silver and gold lettering on the spine, the author's name in silver on the front, and the embossed publisher's logo on the back; author-signed copies of Couples are becoming scarce; this volume would be of interest to collectors of signed first editions of Updike's works; 8vo -- 8 1/2 inches tall, 458 numbered pages; photos available on request. A number of the books are valuable and hard to find, as for example a 1/2-leather-bound first edition of Alfred Russell Wallace's The Malay Archipelago (2 vols.), recently sold for presentation to the Mayor of London on his visit to Malaysia, and a first edition of H. G. Wells' The Time Machine, a novel of the 19th century pointing to a scary future, a continuing revelation to me. Triple G Books stands back of its books in every way.
