About this title

Synopsis:

When Cal tells her that he's being haunted, Bentley is skeptical; but she begins to see The Dark Man also and must battle to save herself and Cal from an evil wizard's malevolence.

From School Library Journal:

Grade 5-7-- A mysterious clock, a talking raven, and a sinister stranger who appears and disappears promise to make the summer after seventh grade the weirdest Bentley has ever experienced. She and her friends Charles and Cal must uncover the secrets of the old Murdoch house in time to free Cal from the power of the evil Mordicus, a wizard in search of a new apprentice. The plot moves smoothly from the first visit to the strange shop where the clock is found, to the final dangerous confrontation with the wizard. Wolf understands children, and her picture of a group of friends at loose ends for the summer is well drawn, as is her portrayal of Bentley's overextended single mother. The otherworldly elements of the story, however, are less well realized, and a thread of the plot involving Bentley's anthropologist uncle adds confusion. Readers looking for characters haunted by the supernatural would do better with Penelope Lively's The Ghost of Thomas Kempe (Dutton, 1973) or Margaret Mahy's The Haunting (Macmillan, 1982). --Ruth S.
