Description:

New York. 1975. Farrar Straus Giroux. 1st American Edition. Small Damp Stain At Bottom Gutter of Rear Free Endpapers, Otherwise Very Good In Slightly Worn Dustjacket. 54. 121 pages. hardcover. Jacket design by Milton Glaser. 0374130728. keywords: July 2. inventory # 40579. FROM THE PUBLISHER - This collection of poems, written during the same period as Steppenwolf, was first published in 1928 in a limited edition of 1,000 copies. Hesse's uneasiness about the degree of self-exposure in these quite untypical poems is evident in that the majority (and many of the best) were never reprinted during his lifetime. Hesse asserted that the Crisis poems deal with the ‘misery and despair of sensual life,’ an element of his own nature which he had repressed until middle age. They reflect his effort to balance the constraints of his intellectual life with his longing for the free experiences of the senses. These autobiographical poems, astonishingly frank and raw at times, contain none of the optimism found in Steppenwolf; instead, they express Hesse's strong fears and pessimism for the modern world. Together with Steppenwolf - the link with that novel is unmistakable - CRISIS served as a catharsis for Hesse, bringing to its climax a difficult period of questioning and despair. About this title:

Synopsis: Presents the screenplay of the film, based on J.G. Ballard's novel of the same name, about the adventures of a married couple in a future world centered on the automobile and on multi-lane freeways

Review: J. G. Ballard's graphic, violent novel is controversial wherever it is read, even on Amazon.com's own Web page! The book's characters are obsessed with automobile accidents and are determined to narrate the horrors of the car crash as luridly as possible. In the words of the novel's protagonist, the wounds caused by automobile collisions are "the keys to a new sexuality born from a perverse technology." Read this novel and learn why David Cronenberg, who had previously adapted Dead Ringers and Naked Lunch for the screen, fought to turn it into his latest film.

Book Description Farrar Straus Giroux, 1975. hardcover. 1st edition. New York. 1975. . Farrar Straus Giroux. 1st American Edition. Small Damp Stain At Bottom Gutter of Rear Free Endpapers, Otherwise Very Good In Slightly Worn Dustjacket . ISBN:0374130728. Translated from the German by Ralph Manheim. Bilingual Edition. 121 pages. hardcover. . Jacket design by Milton Glaser. HERMANN HESSE was born in Württemberg, Germany in 1877. His parents first met at a mission in India, and the repressive piety of his upbringing contributed towards his attempted suicide in 1892. He was determined to be ‘a writer and nothing else’. A major breakthrough came with the novel Peter Camenzind (1904), and in the same year he married his first wife, who bore him three sons. In 1912, the family moved to Switzerland, but his wife’s schizophrenia, the death of his father, and the illness of his youngest son caused Hesse to suffer a breakdown. His subsequent interest in psychiatry–he got to know Carl Jung personally–and his lifelong fascination with Indian religions had a profound influence on his novels, which he called ‘biographies of the soul’ (e.g. Steppenwolf, Siddhartha, The Glass Bead Game). He married twice more. In 1946 Hesse was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature, though later he devoted much of his time to painting water-colours. He died in 1962 in Montagnola, Switzerland, where he is buried. . inventory #40411 Small Damp Stain At Bottom Gutter of Rear Free Endpapers, Otherwise Very Good In Slightly Worn Dustjacket.
