Leigh (1602?71) was a Puritan who had been educated to be a lawyer. He authored several works and the DNB online remarks that "Undoubtedly his most notable work was [t]his Critica sacra, a philological study of the Hebrew and Greek words of the Old and New testaments [sic], initially published in two separate editions in 1639 and 1642 [actually, 1641]. This lexicon became a standard work of reference, winning the plaudits of scholars like William Gouge and Thomas Fuller, earning him the respect of James Ussher, and being translated into several foreign languages." This is the first edition of the "second part" of this work, actually preceding the "first part," which was not printed until 1641. Provenance: Variously on the front pastedown, late 18th-century signature of K. Courtenay, "recommended by Warburton & purchased on his authority as a Lexicon"; bookplate "Presented by Rev. S H. Cone to the American and Foreign Bible Society"; later presented by the American and Foreign Bible Society to Colgate University; on back pastedown, "Jeremiah Gill's Book." Later still in the library of the Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School (properly deaccessioned). => An interesting and important entry in the list of Greek-language Bible dictionaries. 4to (19 cm; 7.5"). [9] ff., 631, [1] pp., [26] ff. STC (rev. ed.) 15409; ESTC S108427. Contemporary plain calf over pasteboards; covers modestly ruled in blind with a triple fillet; rebacked and with new endpapers. Pressure-stamp on title-leaf and two others; some margins with modest repairs; some waterstaining; age-toning and embrittlement. A few corners torn with loss of some letters. Overall a good, solid copy with => an interesting path of provenance. Bookseller Inventory #
