About this title

A Critical Edition of the War of the Worlds: H.G. Wells's Scientific Romance

From Library Journal:

Hughes (humanities, Univ. of Michigan) and Geduld (comparative literature, Indiana Univ.) have prepared a scholarly edition of Wells's novel with a lengthy introduction. In it, they compare the manuscript versions of Wells's novel and explore the publishing history of the English and American serializations and the original 1898 text. They discuss Wells's scientific ideas and other influences from his life, including his critical views on Victorian religious and political attitudes and describe critical reactions to The War of the Worlds following its publication. The text of the novel is based on the 1924 Atlantic edition. Appendixes include a further exploration of variations in manuscripts, four of Wells's articles, and a list of works consulted. Recommended for academic libraries supporting graduate programs in English literature.
