About this Item

[STUART, James]. Critical Observations on the Buildings and Improvements of London. London: Printed for J. Dodsley, 1771. 2nd ed. ?-title, 69pp. Period-style sheep-backed marbled boards, gilt-ruled spine. Faint scattered foxing to outer leaves, else fine. Published in the same year as the first edition. An acute and well-written commentary on contemporary building and urban planning in London. Variously attributed to James "Athenian" Stuart, John Donaldson and, most likely according to Harris (152), to John Stewart, the work advocates the improvement of the Thames and Oxford Street. "Nothing seems more capable of affording satisfaction to a liberal mind, than the many public improvements of elegance and convenience which have lately been made in this metropolis . . . On the whole, I look upon the late increase of London, as a natural consequence of the prosperity of the nation, and a sure token of its healthy and vigorous state, and cannot, with our gloomy politicians, foresee danger and calamity, from an evil, if it were one, that naturally checks itself".
