Book Description Glasgow; James Maclehose & Sons; 1889;, 1889. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Both volumes are near fine, in blue cloth, bright, unfaded spines, with titles and decorations in gilt, hinges are superficially cracked. The author was professor of moral philosophy at the University of Glasgow; this set was the personal copy of Ralph Barton Perry (1876-1957) with his PERSONAL SIGNATURE on the ffep of both volumes. Perry was a leading figure in the movement of American "New Realism" (or neo-Realism), a philosophical movement against Royce's idealism, led by his former students & young colleagues at Harvard (Perry, William P. Montague & E.B. Holt). Its members also had allegiances to other compatible intellectual movements,e.g., behaviorism & pragmatism, but all held a theory of direct aquaintance with physical objects. They were unable to work out a common theory of illusion (i.e. how does one distinguish hallucinations from genuine perceptions?) , and gave way to attacks from critical realism.
