About this Item

85 pp. + 10 pp. publisher's ads at rear. 12mo. Purple linen covered flexible paper boards Yellow end papers. Printed paper label on front cover. Two essays by T. H. Huxley. The first is a defense of Charles Darwin and his evolutionary theories. He calls "Origin of Species" as revolutionary as Newton's "Principia", each in his own time. Huxley calls the criticism of Darwin a "mixture of ignorance and insolence". He first defends Darwin against the religious arguments in opposition, Particularly the Cathollc arguments. Then he attends to some conservative scientists unable to see the import of Darwin in the evolution and development of human intellect. The second essay discusses the importance of universal education and social progress for all citizens in improving the welfare of the state and its citizens. He argues strongly for the role of government in effecting these important social advances. Ownership signature on front free end paper. Wear at ends of spine. Fading of covers.
