Alfred Crocker (1742 - 1821) was the surveyor and printer master of the Bluecoat School, the math school at Christ's Hospital est 1763 specifically for training boys in naviagtion for the Royal Navy. Thomas Gamlen Bunt (1794 - 1872) operated a timber and land surveying business, was associated with George Biddell Airy and William Whewell. Bunt constructed a planetarium in 1832 and erected an improved version of the self-registering tide gauge, which allowed him to publish widely used tide tables.
