Synopsis: What was love like in the era before annulments, reliable contraceptives and acceptance of homosexuality? A CRUEL CALM, Paris Between the Wars visits an era of idealism and innovation on all levels when Paris was the cultural capital of the Western World. Politics, religion, social mores and a special time in history (1927-1939) determine the fate of a young Catholic socialite from Washington, DC as she tries to find out if it is only after great sorrow that love can come again. Well researched, A CRUEL CALM includes Lindbergh's flight across the Atlantic and the huge crowds that awaited him at Le Bouget Aeroport; Gertrude Stein, James Joyce, Joseph Campbell and Hemingway in their own words; the Surrealist movement; lady pilots Bessie Coleman and Amelia Earhart; a train ride to Reno; Black Thursday; the ravages from the Great War, omens of a new war brewing, and much more. This is a story replete with historical detail, universal conflict, and sensational romance and could easily be adapted as a screenplay.

About the Author: Although born in La Jolla, California, Patricia spent half her childhood in Washington, D.C., the home of several generations of her mother's family. In 1961, her mother died. Only 18, Patricia returned to Vassar College with a year at the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium, and earned a B.A. degree in Philosophy. Later, as a single parent of three children, she raised, raced, and showed Thoroughbred horses. She also completed a Masters degree followed by a PhD. Patricia has taught English and writing, written for magazines, had a newspaper column, and sold many of her paintings. She now lives in Virginia with her husband and menagerie of dogs, horses, and cats. Author of five books, she was the 2002 winner of San Diego Book Awards Association, recipient of the 2004 Woman of Achievement Award, Best Books Award Finalist, and 1st runner up trophy winner JADA Award Winning Novel Contest 2006. Book Description Xlibris Corporation. Paperback. Book Condition: New. Paperback. 238 pages. Focused on the period between the wars (1927-1939), A CRUEL CALM visits an era of innovation on all levels when Paris was the cultural capital of the world. With Charles Lindbergh, Coco Chanel, Gertrude Stein, e e cummings, Hemingway, James Joyce, Joseph Campbell, Amelia Earhart, m Bessie Coleman, my historical fiction, which took 15 years to research and write, depicts both history and the protagonists poignant pursuit of love. Although the era of Paris between the wars was a showcase of technological and cultural dynamism, other forces were at work. . One great war had ended, its tragedy obvious visually and emotionally. The next great war: was simmering, drawing strength from issues unresolved by the first conflict. Lindberg closed the gap between two great powers, the United States and Europe, by flying across the Atlantic. Aviationa was enjoying its Golden Age, a positive legacy of war. The Catholic Church, however, sunk its heels in tradition. While individuals anguished, the church was unrelenting in its stance against annulment. This is the story of one of those individuals, my mother, and her quest. This item ships from multiple locations. Your book may arrive from Roseburg,OR, La Vergne,TN. Paperback.
