JAMES PEGGS [1793-1850], along with William Bampton, was a pioneer of the English General Baptists mission to Cuttack, then-capital city of Orissa, to evangelize the Odia people. He and his fellow evangelizers arrived in Orissa in 1822 and began their tasks by establishing schools and distributing literature. Peggs was a prolific author, mostly concerned with humanitarian issues in India and back in England. Some of his many tracts include : The present state of East India Slavery, chiefly extracted from the Parliamentary papers on the subject. Printed March 1828, Aug. 1832, Aug. 1838.
