About this title

Synopsis:

GREEN, C.: CUBISM AND ITS ENEMIES. NEW HAVEN, CT, 1987, vii 326 p. figuras.Encuadernacion original. Nuevo.

From Library Journal:

Green, scholar at the Courtauld Institute, University of London, has written a densely detailed study of post-World War I Cubism and its antecedents. He discusses Cubist practitioners such as Picasso, Braques, Leger, and the broad spectrum from Dada and Surrealism to nonobjective painting, distinguishing between "conservative" factions and a "progressive" avant-garde in European painting. Because he does not see the developments as linear, the narrative becomes quite convoluted. While the book has a wide scope and many black-and-white plates, its thesis style may be off-putting to nonscholars. Lay readers are better served by the great variety of histories of modern art from Herbert Read to John Russell. Hara Seltzer, N.Y.P.L.
