About this Item

Tall octavo. Half-title. Engraved frontispiece portrait, engraved title. Original floral-embossed green cloth, each cover with central gilt emblem. Provenance: ownership signature of Nathan Arnold, 1839 on front free endpaper. Drake was an early American poet, considered part of the "Knickerbocker" group. His daughter published this work posthumously, in 1835, and it was reprinted in this edition the following year; the engraved title bears the 1835 date. Poe published a famous review of Drake and Fitz-Greene Halleck, preferring Drake's work though using both as a platform to propose the need for a new American verse. BAL 4827.
