About this Item

Brown buckram with gilt lettering and decorations, elaborate embossed decorations to front board. Chipping to headand heel of spine. Corners bumped and rubbed to boards. A previous young owner named Henry Hugh spent a good deal of time writing his name in various scripts on the pastedowns and front endpaper. The rear endpaper is missing, and the paper at gutter is beginning to split. Text shows some spotting and soil throughout, a rather severe set of four spots on the first page of the chapter regarding Paul Jones. Goodrich, who also penned the Peter Parley tales, was considered controversial in his day for including illustrations in his children's text books. He was also a firm believer that the violent fairy tales of the day would cause irrepairable damage to young minds, and felt that they should be banned. This is a book about people who have accomplished great things such as Mozart, John Smith, Ethan Allen, Robin Hood. Wonderful engravings throughout including portraits of the various subjects.
