About this title

Gathers a selection of the author's essays, travel pieces, and personality profiles from the New Yorker magazine

From Publishers Weekly:

In a preface to this selection of 18 profiles, New Yorker writer Hamburger recalls the early days of his nearly 50 years with the magazine in which they appeared and relationships with his colleagues. A master of the art of extracting information and compressing interviews into biographical monologues, he excels at capturing the telling gesture and physical detail like the playful discourse on Dean Acheson's mustache in an otherwise thoughtful appraisal of the former secretary of state. His subjects range from statesmen to graphic and performing artistsanatomy teacher and artist Robert Hale, Oscar Hammerstein III, among othersand his portraits are often fleshed out, as in the case of New York Public Library head Vartan Gregorian, with views about the interviewee from friends and colleagues. The piece on Gregorianone of the most probing of the collectionincidentally provides behind-the-scenes insight into the selection process for such a post. Hamburger also powerfully evokes the mood of such events as FDR's first inaugural and the repressive atmosphere of post-WW II Yugoslavia.
